We’re really excited to be holding our 4th Health Disruptors video chat on September 20, 2016 at 5 PM ET (2 PM PT). We’re sorry to say that the previous Blab platform we used is now dead (#RIPBlab), but we’re going to try out the Firetalk platform for our next chat. It’s not blab, but it’s pretty close.

If you’re not familiar with the format and approach of the Health Disruptors blab, you can read more details here.

Melissa McCool (MindStile and STI Innovations) and John Lynn (Healthcare Scene) are excited to have an amazing guest host this month, Steve Sisko (@shimcode).  Steve has proposed the topic of “Addressing Social Determinants of Health via Non-medical, Community-based Resources and Tools” for this month’s chat.

While it seems that finding cures for diseases and performing specific medical procedures would make the biggest contribution to promoting health, this just isn’t the case. It’s been established that 30% of health outcomes are due to specific health/medical issues with the balance attributed to social determinants, environment influence and behavioral health challenges. Accordingly, tools that can identify, match and support local resources with specific needs play a vital role to play in meeting one’s practical healthcare needs and improving ones quality of life.

Discussion Topics:

  1. What are some of the tools and strategies that can be used to address specific social determinants of health impacting individuals?
  2. What are some of the ways in which technology can identify and match non-medical resources with the social and behavioral needs of high-risk patients?
  3. How could the different resources/players that provide medical and non-medical services communicate better between themselves and the people they serve?
  4. What are some of the methods and channels for distributing ‘assistance’ to those who can benefit the most from non-medical resources?
  5. What are some of the ways existing healthcare software vendors can enhance their product and service offerings to address social determinants of health?
  6. What are some of the ways to finance the provision of non-medical services that can directly impact the outcome of someone’s medical condition(s)?
  7. How can digital tools bridge care provided in clinical settings with community-based, non-medical resources?

We’re really excited to be holding our 3rd Health Disruptors Blab chat on July 19, 2016 at Noon ET (9 AM PT). We decided to mix up the schedule a little bit. It’s still the 3rd Tuesday of the month, but this time we’re trying it in the middle of the day to see how things go in the middle of the day versus the night. Let us know what you think of the time change.

If you’re not familiar with the format and approach of the Health Disruptors blab, you can read more details here.

Melissa McCool (MindStile and STI Innovations) and John Lynn (Healthcare Scene) are excited to have an amazing guest host this month, Erik Pupo (@erikpupo), Managing Director of North America Clinical & Health Management Services At Accenture. Erik has proposed the topic of “Value Based Care: Embracing Technology as a Driver of Care Delivery Change” for this month’s Health Disruptors chat. To start the discussion, here’s some thoughts and questions that we’ll use to guide our conversation:

With bundled, capitated and risk-based contracts setting a fixed top line, there is a scramble in motion among providers and payers to better leverage technology to understand financial and clinical risks.

  • How do we leverage technology to improve the patient billing experience?
  • How can providers and payers adopt a digital footprint to increase patient financial educational tools?
  • What are the different approaches for financial and risk modeling using predictive analytics tools and approaches that can inform leadership on cost and margin issues?

Value Based Care also represents an opportunity to increase technology penetration in behavioral health, palliative, or post-acute services to improve care at lower costs

  • Can we use the cloud to automate physician efforts in populating quality measures?
  • How can improvements in IT design and development processes drive lower costs for deploying IT to low-income and safety net hospitals?

If you’ve never used blab before, it’s really easy to use. You can watch and participate in the chat on blab itself or in the embed below. Just visit this blog post or the blab page on the date of the event and you can join in on the conversation live. Yes, that’s right, we encourage you to not just listen to the conversation, but to join in.

We’re planning to start off holding these monthly on the 3rd Tuesday of every month so put it on your calendar.

Also, feel free to use the #HealthDisruptors hashtag for things you learn or hear on the blab chat as well. Thanks in advance for those who spread the word about this new endeavor. We think it could grow into a really special community.

We’re really excited to be holding our 2nd Health Disruptors Blab chat on June 21, 2016 at 10 PM ET (7 PM PT). Yes, we realize this is late for many of you on the east coast, but that should make for some fun late night conversations. Most of the health disruptors I know send me emails at all hours of the day and night, so hopefully this time will work out for most. We’re continuing to evaluate the time and changing it as our schedules permit and as the community desires.

If you’re not familiar with the format and approach of the Health Disruptors blab, you can read more details here.

Melissa McCool (MindStile and STI Innovations) will be the host for this month’s Health Disruptors chat where we’ll talk about “Solving the Problems of the Upstream Determiners of Health.” To start the discussion, here’s the big overarching question we’d like to discuss along with some questions that dive a little deeper into the topic.

Big Question:

  • How can we solve the problem of the upstream determiners of health?

Diving Deeper:

  • What does this mean exactly?
  • Whose job is it?
  • What are some creative ways to address this issue?
  • If I had a magic wand, I would solve this problem by…
  • What is the role of tech?
  • Who and what companies are being most disruptive to healthcare?
